Abortion: A Curse On America

By: Kelley Kent

“I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing. Therefore choose life so that both you and your descendants may live.” – Deuteronomy 30:19 (NKJV)

Physical and spiritual life is multi-generational. When one generation chooses to obey God and live, then the one after is blessed and allowed to prosper (Deuteronomy 28:1-14). Yet when one generation chooses to disobey God and die, then the one after is cursed and destroyed (28:15-68).

Blessed people have many children (Deuteronomy 28:4, 11). They have the freedom to train those children in the ways of the Lord (6:7). By contrast, cursed people have few children (28:18). They don’t get to raise their children either; the latter are taken into captivity while their parents “long for them all day” (28:32, 41). Cursed people eventually serve “a nation of fierce countenance that does not … show favor to the young,” i.e. their children (28:50). Due to sieges in war, they consume their own children (28:53-57).

Spiritually deceived through idolatry, cursed people also sacrifice their children to an unknown God (Leviticus 20:2-5, Jeremiah 32:35, Ezekiel 16:21, 20:26-31, 23:37). This act of abortion or infanticide is spiritual prostitution and an abomination, worthy of death. It defiles God’s sanctuary and blasphemes his holy name (Leviticus 20:3). God says he will set his face against all those who commit child sacrifice – them and their families (20:5). God will also judge those who hide their eyes from people who commit such wickedness, instead of justly using capital punishment on them (20:5). Anyone who commits abortion will not receive answers to prayer (Ezekiel 20:31). God is making them desolate so that they will know he is God (20:26).

America today is cursed. Families used to have 10-12 children. Now they have two, one, or none. The rest are murdered via abortion, which is nothing other than a blood sacrifice to demons. America isn’t raising her own children either, except in homeschooling families. She also serves a fierce government that does not favor the young. We see this trend in sex education, atheism and homosexuality in schools and the media, and the DCF. If she continues in this trend, America may go into captivity and consume her own children due to war, famine, or siege.

Since this generation is cursed, the one before it chose to disobey God and die. God has given his people one remedy for removing a curse. “Return to the Lord your God and obey his voice, according to all that I command you today, you and your children, with all your heart and with all your soul so that the Lord your God will bring you back from captivity and have compassion on you. … The Lord your God will make you abound in all the work of your hand, in the fruit of your body, in the increase of your livestock, and in the produce of your land for good” (Deuteronomy 30:2-3, 9, NKJV).

The pro-life movement in America today knows nothing about generational blessings and curses or spiritual sacrifices to demons. This movement has little power. I’m not sure its leaders even know who the Holy Spirit is. Instead, pro-lifers like to lay all guilt for the abortion Holocaust at the feet of President Obama, Planned Parenthood, and those who work at clinics. These people are guilty before God. They will be punished (judged), either in this life or the next. But someone’s missing in this list: the women who walk into abortion clinics and choose death for their unborn babies. It seems that everyone is guilty except the “mothers.”

Satan deceived Eve into disobedience, but she and Adam were still guilty. Satan deceived Cain into killing his brother Abel, but he was still guilty. Whether or not we’re deceived, we will bear our guilt for sin unless we repent. We don’t have to listen to Satan and choose sin and death. We can listen to God instead, choosing holiness and life. But God always give people a choice.

Closing bars and clubs doesn’t get rid of alcoholics and pole dancers. Closing seedy motels and enforcing street curfews doesn’t get rid of prostitutes. Closing gun stores and confiscating guns doesn’t get rid of murderers. These people will still find a way to sin and they’re still guilty. Yet Spirit-filled Christians won’t walk into such places even if they were open day and night.

Why aren’t deceived “mothers” of aborted babies guilty? Why do they get off the hook when pro-lifers play the blame game? Closing abortion clinics won’t keep women from killing their unborn children if death – the unjust death of an innocent person – consumes their hearts. All they need is a pill (RU-486), a knife, or a gun. A “friend” in a back alley will also do. Child sacrifice is as old as the hills. The 21st-century method is not as important as the demonic spirit behind it.

Besides, people who want to keep abortion legal and clinics open in order to prevent back-alley abortions don’t pity the unborn baby, just the “mother.” They’re horrified that the woman might die – justly for her sin, I might add. These people have no love for the baby. They only think of the inconvenient timing or social stigma. Some also want to punish the baby for its father’s sins.

Today’s clinic workers, “mothers,” pro-choice politicians and the media won’t believe and receive the truths of imago dei and God’s righteous judgment on sin so that they might be saved (2 Thessalonians 2:10). They won’t let God choose the size and timing of their family either. Instead, they believe Satan and the world’s lies because they have pleasure in selfishness and unrighteousness (2:11-12). All these people will be condemned (2:12).

By contrast, women converted to Christ will choose life for their unborn children even if an abortion clinic were open in every city and RU-486 were sitting on the shelf of every drugstore. They won’t eat the apple of sin. Women converted to Christ will also act as midwives, agents of life. They won’t kill others’ unborn babies even if an ungodly person in authority asks them to.

The Hebrew midwives Shiphrah and Puah could have feared Pharaoh and obeyed his order to kill all the male babies (Exodus 1:16). They didn’t. They feared God, saved the babies alive, and lied about it (1:17-19). These two women received households – husbands and children – as a reward for their faith (1:21).

The Hebrew slave Jochabed could have feared Pharaoh and obeyed his order to throw her newborn son Moses into the Nile river (Exodus 1:22). She didn’t. She feared God and hid her son for three months (2:2, Hebrews 11:23).

Moses still went down the Nile, but he was covered physically in an ark of bulrushes and spiritually in his mother’s prayers (Exodus 2:3). Instead of landing in the clutches of a bloodthirsty Pharaoh, Moses landed in the arms of his compassionate daughter (2:5-6). Like Abraham after he had offered his son Isaac (Genesis 22, Hebrews 11:17-19), Jochabed received her son again (Exodus 2:7-9). She trained Moses in the ways of the Lord while nursing him. He then became the son of Pharaoh’s daughter (2:10).

Moses is a type of Jesus Christ, Egypt a metaphor for death. In other words, the same thing was destined to happen again. The wise men could have feared King Herod and returned to Jerusalem to tell him where baby Jesus, King of the Jews, was living (Matthew 2:8). They didn’t. They feared God, listened to divine warning in a dream, and returned home by another route (2:12). The Bible doesn’t say how God rewarded them for their faith, but I’m sure that he did.

Joseph could have feared the citizens of Nazareth and privately put away Mary for an unplanned pregnancy (Matthew 1:19). Instead, he feared God, listened to the angel of the Lord in a dream, and married her (1:20-24).

Mary and Joseph could have feared King Herod and remained in Bethlehem so he could destroy Jesus (2:13). They didn’t. They feared God, listened to an angel of the Lord in a dream, and fled to Egypt (2:13-15). Without this divine warning, Mary and Joseph would have stayed behind. The slaughter of the innocents would have included Jesus Christ (2:16). Mary would have been weeping for her son like Rachel for her children (2:18). But God intervened in order to fulfill his Word (1:23, 26; 2:6, 15).

God can intervene today if people will fear him instead of the media, the gossips, and those in authority. But He doesn’t open a door until we say yes to him and life, no to Satan and death. Where are the “yes” people? Where are the Shiprahs, Puahs, and wise men – agents of life? Where are the Amrams, Jochabeds, Marys, and Josephs – fathers and mothers of prayer? Where are the men and women who will fear God and obey him, regardless of the cost?

Can the pro-life movement imagine Spirit-filled people choosing life and acting as agents of life? I don’t think so. Until it deals with sin in the human heart and spiritual wickedness in high places through the spiritual weapons of prayer and the Word of God, this movement will keep spinning its wheels in the mud instead of producing real change. Closing abortion clinics, restricting RU-486, and teaching personhood is like confiscating guns. This short-term solution doesn’t fix the heart problem. It’s a band-aid for the life-threatening gangrene called sin.

God can do more with the abortion culture than apply band-aids. Through the power of his Spirit, God can change hearts. He can lead his people to choose life so that the next generation may live. God can do all this if we’ll let him. But we must play our part. We must return to God, confessing and repenting of the sin of Abortion as a church and as a nation. We must choose life.
